Education Reform: Debunking the Myths

To understand the motives behind the Education Reform Movement, it’s important to lift the veil behind the promises. Over the next few posts, we’ll take a deeper look at some of the Reform Movement’s mission statements and ideologies. As always, we encourage you to do your own research, get involved, and join the discussion.

One of the major claims of Education Reformers is that public education is failing. The idea is to create a sense of panic amongst parents. Their message is simple: Education is broken. We have the answers. Blame is unfairly placed on teachers and local school boards. Proof is given in the form of plummeting test scores, widening achievement gaps, and falling graduation rates.

But is public education really failing? If you research the numbers they don’t paint the same dark picture the Reformers do. Instead they show consistent, steady growth in test scores and graduations.

Yes! Magazine recently posted an article aptly titled “The Myth Behind Public School Failure.”

The truth is that public education is not failing the way the Reformers claim. What then, is the motive behind Education Reform’s claims? Stay tuned….
